Cancer Support Groups
Cancer support groups play a critical role in the fight against cancer. These support groups can be found in almost every country, some are even international groups that found in several countries. Some of these support groups can be termed general in the sense that they all types of cancer. There are also those groups that fight only specific types of cancer for example breast cancer or prostate cancer. Some of the biggest and well established support groups can be found in the United States.
One such organization is the American Cancer Society. It is second to the federal government in terms of funding cancer research. Another of the many cancer support groups is the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that contributes to pediatric cancer treatment as well as research.
There is also the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization that was founded in 1978.It provides information and support to people affected by breast cancer and their service also includes breast cancer telephone hotlines. National Cervical cancer Coalition (NCCC) is a support group that educates the public and discusses issues that face women with cervical cancer.
US TOO is another support group that supports men with prostate cancer. Some support groups just provide online information on cancer and have experts who may respond to inquiries or queries regarding cancer. Such groups include the International Myeloma Foundation that provides information on treatment and patient support. Another is OncoChat which is an interactive online group that supports patients with cancer and uses the Internet Relay Chat as a medium of communication with patients.
